Hayden Center, PhD, LPC, has been treating individuals and families who suffer from substance abuse disorders, including opioid use disorder, for over 25 years in a private practice setting. Dr. Center most recently served as the evaluator for the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention’s (CSAP) Southeast Center for the Application of Prevention Technologies (SECAPT) and the Border Center for the Application of Prevention Technologies (BCAPT).

Dr. Center served as a consultant to the Alabama Governor’s Office of Drug Abuse Policy for 10 years and has worked with numerous state and local agencies in the state of Alabama. 

He has provided over 200 trainings on the topics of science-based prevention, evaluation, risk and protective factors, co-occurring disorders, and other mental health and substance abuse issues. His current interests are providing training and technical assistance to increase the usage and effectiveness of evidence-based treatments and approaches. 

In addition to his private practice, Dr. Center has taught in university settings for over 28 years. He teaches graduate-level courses in Theories of Psychotherapy, Advanced Objective Testing, Psychopharmacology, and undergraduate courses in psychology at Auburn University in Montgomery, Alabama. He earned his PhD in counselor education and Master of Science in psychology at Auburn University in Montgomery, Alabama.

Objectives

1. Differentiate between various trauma types including developmental trauma, attachment-related trauma, and how they are classified in the DSM-5® to inform clinical treatment interventions. 
2. Explain the neuroscience behind trauma’s impact on both the developing and adult brain, focusing on alterations leading to substance misuse tendencies in clients. 
3. Discuss the self-medication theory and its relationship to trauma to improve treatment outcomes. 
4. Identify and recognize common symptoms of trauma, its co-morbidities, and the definition and implications of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES) as it relates to case conceptualization. 
5. Understand the bi-directional relationship between trauma and substance misuse, with a focus on vulnerability due to substance misuse, and its treatment implications. 
6. Articulate the pharmacokinetics of drug processing, differentiate between various modes of drug use, and enumerate the short- and long-term effects of substance misuse and trauma to inform the clinician’s choice of treatment interventions. 
7. Master the utilization of various screening instruments and in-depth assessment approaches for trauma, PTSD, and substance use disorders in a clinical setting. 
8. Understand the neurobiology of interventions and the difference between top-down and bottom-up therapeutic approaches, as well as the various phases of treatment as related to clinical treatment. 
9. Examine trauma-informed psychotherapeutic approaches like Trauma-Focused CBT, Cognitive Processing Therapy, Prolonged Exposure Therapy, and EMDR, and their recent research findings as it relates to clinical practice. 
10. Explore the mind-body trauma-informed approaches such as yoga and massage and their therapeutic implications for symptom management. 
11. Differentiate between various trauma-informed psychotherapeutic approaches including Motivational Interviewing, Contingency Management, 12-Step Counseling, and Family counseling to improve clinical outcomes. 
12. Assess and modify treatment approaches to maximize effectiveness, ensuring they are trauma-informed, ethically grounded, and its clinical implications. 
13. Identify research limitations and potential risks associated with psychotherapeutic trauma treatments for purposes of client psychoeducation. 
14. Integrate assessment findings to determine trauma symptom intensity and substance misuse severity to inform clinical treatment interventions. 
15. Evaluate and choose appropriate interventions based on the severity of substance misuse and the intensity of trauma symptoms to improve client engagement. 
16. Examine provided case studies, learning to apply screening tools and develop treatment plans tailored to each individual scenario, put to practical use in-session. 
17. Recognize and understand the benefits and implementation of Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) and be updated on medications under current trials as it relates to treatment outcomes.
18. Leverage additional resources to further develop treatment plans and deliver evidence-based interventions effectively to alleviate symptoms of trauma and substance misuse.
